The Underground Railway Museum

At Deak ter. you may stop in at the Underground Railway Museum and learn a little about the history of the continent's oldest metro line. The Underground Railway Museum, opened in 1975, commemorates the first underground railway of the European continent. The Millennium Underground Railway was the first underground railway in continental Europe (1896), and today it is part of the World Heritage. In that year, the country celebrated the millennium of the Settlement of the Magyars with festivals and exhibitions. The construction works began in August 1894, and the official inauguration was on 2 May 1896. It was also then unique in the whole world that the railway operated using electricity instead of steam engines. Franz Joseph emperor and king, the ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, visited the underground railway on 8 May 1896, and after that the railway was named after him. In 1996, for its centenary the whole underground section of the line and the museum, as well were refurbished.
